On March 8th, the members of the Bond Junior Council, along with their teachers, volunteered at the Daily Bread Food Bank.
“This is the first time that the kids have done this event, but we’d like to make it an annual thing, especially after the response from our parents. The parents were all very supportive in sending their kids as well as providing cash donations,” said Barbara Billing, a Bond Teacher and the organizer of this event. “We try to make the kids not only help through bringing a donation, but also get involved by working together during the whole morning to pack boxes of cereals.”
Ms. Billing mentioned that the students were more helpful than she thought. “They gave a great deal of manpower for the whole morning. I think it’s not only the donation, but to educate the kids about the hunger in Toronto, which our kids didn’t really know much about,” she added.
Bond Junior Council also attended two mini-lectures offered by the workers at the Daily Bread Food Bank, explaining to them why the Food Bank is doing this and where the food is distributed.
Alexandra Balm, a Grade 4 student at Bond, said: “I worked hard together with my friends Samantha and Maude. This morning, we put the labels on the boxes, passed the items and helped each other to carry boxes. We’ve been sorting the boxes, and so far we’ve done 7 trays full of boxes. ”
After a morning of hard work, Bond students who volunteered at table four, packed 4176lbs (1894.2kg) which can help 596 families. The students who volunteered at table five sorted 3030lbs (1374.4kg) which can help 432 families.
Great job, everybody! We are very proud of your dedicated work!
