"Happy Dig Day!" This was the salutation readily shared by staff as students in Mr. Simpson and Ms. Chellew's Anthropology class took time out of their regular Monday schedule to participate in an "authentic to Lakefield" archaeological dig.
Students explored a variety of accurate archaeological techniques as they scraped and sifted their way through three levels of artifacts. Bone artifacts of various homo-species were uncovered, as were numerous stone tools from three specific time periods. The exploration will continue in the classroom where students will work together to research their artifacts and create a story that supports the findings from the dig.
Although famous tomb raider Lara Croft was nowhere in sight, we were graced with the presence of our very own Indiana Jones, Mr. Bruce McMahon. The brains and brawn behind the whole operation, Mr. McMahon provided us with ongoing expertise, support and humour throughout the day. A special thank you to Katherine Petrasyk ’18, Senior in Charge of Social Science, who joined us for the morning to lend her expertise to the younger students. It was wonderful to see her take the lead in showing other students how to carefully dig for the artifacts.
