Strumming the chords to I Love Rock & Roll by Joan Jett won St. Andrew’s student Jack Davies a recording gig.
Jack, a grade 9 student, submitted his audition video for The Kid Mitchell Band Vol. II. He was announced a winner on Tuesday during the Kim Mitchell Show on Q107. Jack will be playing bass while four other under-14 kids from around the GTA contribute the drums, rhythm guitar, lead guitar, and vocals.
The group of five will record Joan Jett’s famous song, in addition to making a music video and performing live. Their first recording session will be held at Metal Works Studio on Tuesday, Nov. 25. Jack is very excited to get started.
“We were all so overwhelmed and blown away by the talent that’s out there,” states the Q107 website, but Jack was the lucky winner. This is the second annual band that Canadian musician Kim Mitchell has established, last year having the winners record his own song, Rock & Roll Duty.
“I was doubting myself a little when I submitted my audition because they’d picked a less challenging song,” Jack said of the chords for I Love Rock & Roll. SAC’s music teacher John Richardson introduced Jack to the bass in Middle School and he has been perfecting it ever since.
In Jack’s spare time he has also picked up other instruments including keyboards, guitar, upright bass, and vocals. He jams with his friend, Ian, once or twice a week and together they attend “Open Mic Nights” around town, just recently playing at Colonel Mustard’s in Newmarket.
