It was another gold sweep for SAC musicians at MusicFest Regionals this week, as all three SAC bands earned top standing in their category.
Double-gold performances were earned by the Wind Ensemble, the grade 9 and 10 Concert Band, and the Middle School Band – 140 students in all. This achievement qualifies them to represent Ontario at the national competition in Ottawa May 12-13.MusicFest Canada brings together thousands of the country’s finest young musicians in the name of musical excellence.
SAC’s Music Department has enjoyed a stellar record in this competition over the past decade, qualifying for nationals where the highest gold standing was earned in the years they chose to compete. Based on this success, the Wind Ensemble now competes in the more competitive level 400 after moving up last year.
The double-gold distinction means both American adjudicators awarded a gold ranking. The musicians had spent months preparing for this week’s competition: the Upper School musicians under the accomplished direction of Sandi Chasson, Head of Music; Garry Page; and the Middle School Band under the esteemed direction of John Richards.
In addition to the gold ratings and invitation to MusicFest Nationals, St. Andrew's received four prestigious awards at the closing ceremony for the Ontario Band
Association's Music Festival Friday evening.
Wind Ensemble: Outstanding Woodwind Award
Grade 9 & 10 Band: Outstanding Brass Award
Middle School: Overall Outstanding Performance and Outstanding Brass Award
Ms. Chasson, Mr. Page, and Mr. Richards were understandably proud of their students’ achievements.
“They wowed the judges with their musicality,” said Ms. Chasson, offering her congratulations to all participating students. “You rock.”
