Practice pays. It was on display at Fall Music Night on Thursday, Nov. 20. Directed by Peter Smith, the senior jazz band features some of the most talented musicians from Grades 10 to 12.
“We practise once a week for 2.5 hours and play gigs at various competitions including Humber College and York University, and schools such as BSS, Havergal and Branksome Hall,” says IB1 student and band member Harkirat Ahluwalia.
The band will also play in New York in April and hope to continue its annual trip to Montreal in January, says Ahluwalia. Its repertoire consists of professional songs in many different genres, from famous artists such as Duke Ellington and Earth, Wind & Fire to Thelonious Monk. They also have two singers from BSS who accompany them on songs such as “What a Wonderful World” by Louis Armstrong and “Come Fly With Me” by Frank Sinatra.
By the way, it’s a little known fact that you can hire the band to play your gig. If interested please contact Harkirat Ahluwalia at [email protected].
