SAC students have done it again, and this time, not as athletes, scholars, or Cadets, but as Spanish speakers.
On April 27, five students from SAC—Ben Ding ’18, Jan-Philip Faupel ’18, JunKyo Kim ’19, Eugene Lee ’19, and Jake Kim ’19—competed in the 7th Annual Ontario Secondary School Spanish Competition against 135 students representing 30 schools from around the province.
Out of all the participants, Ben Ding stood out. With his proficient grammar skills and almost fluent oral skills, Ben won first overall in the Spanish Plus category (non-native Spanish speakers). For this accomplishment, he won a trophy and received $125.
“This contest was an awesome experience,” says Ben. “It tested us on various aspects in Spanish, including writing, reading, listening, and speaking. This was actually one of the few times in my life that I could use Spanish to communicate with people for a whole day, and this not only improved my Spanish, but also let me meet new friends.”
Spanish teacher Claudio Numa says the competition is an excellent event for students to meet, share, and showcase their passion for languages. “With the addition of Spanish dance lessons and music, it created a friendly and happy event,” says Señor Numa.
This is the second time in three participations that SAC was in the winner’s circle.
“This shows the quality of students we have here at SAC,” adds Señor Numa
Congratulation to Ben and all participants for making this year’s competition a huge success.
