What your child will learn in gymnastic camps

Here's a quick overview of what kids learn in dance programs and classes found on OurKids.net. Consult each class linked to above, to find specifics of what they offer.

Power tumbling involves gymnasts running on a spring runway that is bouncier than a floor exercise. The springs allow athletes to perform complicated flips and twists.

Rhythmic gymnastics involves the performance of jumps, leaps, and tosses with hoops, balls, clubs, and ribbons.

On the trampoline, gymnasts perform flips and twists on every bounce.

Acrobatic gymnastics involves pairs of gymnasts in an acrobatic program that includes holds, handstands, and balancing with each other.

Artistic gymnastics is a more advanced form for teens and older kids. They perform on various apparatuses, including floor exercise, pommel horse, rings, vaults, parallel, and horizontal bars.

Benefits kids gain from gymnastics camp

Gymnastic camps provide a whole set of benefits to your kids. From coordination to social skills, and more. Here’s a look at the benefits your child can get from gymnastics training.

Flexibility, balance, and coordination. Children get to learn the fundamentals of movement and develop an increased attunement with their bodies. Training received in gymnastics camp can help children better prepare for and improve in other sports like soccer and basketball. Increased muscle flexibility makes them less prone to injury.

Increased strength. Gymnastics develops strength in the core, legs, and arms. Young gymnasts become stronger and, in turn, they grow in self-confidence.

Discipline and determination. Gymnastic camp instills the value of self-discipline in children.  They’ll find some exercises or routines harder than others. They’ll learn that practice makes perfect and they come to appreciate the value of repetition. Developing these traits at an early age can help your child excel later in life.

Sportsmanship and social skills. Gymnastics is an individual sport within a group setting, encouraging your child to interact with others and develop socially. The supportive atmosphere allows children to learn how to take—and give—critical feedback.

    Questions to ask gymnastic camps

Here are some questions to ask camps or consider for yourself, as you review options for your child:

What are the trainers’ qualifications? Always ensure that the camp has qualified coaches who are experts at what they do. You want to be sure that trainers take the utmost care with children.

What is the state or quality of equipment? Check out whether the place has sufficient essential equipment. How new or updated at trampolines and tumble tracks, for example? How clean are apparatuses and other equipment?

What bonuses do they offer? See if you qualify for any bonus offer that will benefit your child. Do they offer referral fees if your child brings a friend?

Related camps you might also enjoy

We list over 200 possible camp activities that kids can engage in. Some suggestions below dig deeper into one kind of gymnastics, while others both use and expand on your limberness.

Acro camps focus on acrobatics, ideal for kids who want to improve or indulge in this specific interest. Camps and classes teach things like rolls, cartwheels, back bridges, and more.

Trampoline camp is similar to the above in that it focuses on one of the main types–arguably the most fun–of gymnastics.

Cheerleading camp employs many of the same skills and moves you’ll learn in gymnastics, and cheering is an ideal way to show off your physical prowess to more people.

Martial arts camp focuses on these arts which have an interesting potential to both increase and apply some of the flexibility you’ve gained.

Dance camp also focuses on activities that will use some gymnast skills and also offer an application of them, in a form that’s both artistic and expressive.
