The Impromptu Debate at St. Clement's School marks the opening of the Fulford Debate season. MacLachlan Team members took part in the debate on Saturday, September 27. At an impromptu debate debaters find out the resolution to be debated just 30 minutes ahead of actually starting the debate. This makes for a wide open field of discussion points that results in a lot of fun.
The resolution "That individuals have the right to be forgotten" was the first to be debated -- it no doubt referred to recent discussions about the deleting of Google history profiles and so forth. The second resolution of the day was, "The teaching of poetry should be eliminated from the high school curriculum." St. Clement's also invited four very experienced Hart House debaters to engage in a showcase debate in the afternoon. The resolution being discussed was, "That students should be paid money for good grades." The high quality engagement was in evidence all day.
MacLachlan finished 9th on the day and our top individual finisher was 11th out of 30 debaters.
As always, a big thank you to our Debate Team coordinator Itand mentor Mr. Dominato for organizing a successful day.
