“Flow” tells the story of water as it makes its way through our watersheds. From its source, water travels through rural and urban areas before flowing into lakes and oceans around the world. At the start of our mural a young person is depicted reaching out to prevent a piece of garbage entering the water system, signifying that we can all take small steps to keep our water fresh and clean and free of contaminants for the future generations.
The Star Academy Senior Class embarked on an action project self-named “Kids Against Road Salt” in September 2013 after signing up to take part in the WaterDocs @ School Programme, offering Grade 8 classes a chance to create a documentary based on a social action project to advocate water conservation. Since taking the first exploratory steps into learning about water, the Senior Students built an online Social Media campaign that is sweeping across the globe, inspiring change in ice-melting habits in all those they connect with! Through this unique inquiry-based project, students have learned to become advocates for their environment while learning important skills about researching and backing up their opinions with facts.
This 5-panel mural was painted by member of the Senior Class at Star Academy with guidance from Lori Klan, owner of ARTS JAM, a unique Arts Programme which gives students confidence and experience in a variety of artistic mediums. A plaque has been placed beside the mural as special recognition from the Region of Peel who partnered with us to display our mural on the construction wall for the Hanlan Water Project at South Service Rd and Cormack Cres. This plaque and recognition will be unveiled at a special ceremony on January 22nd at 10:30am at Star Academy, followed by a brief walk to the mural and photo opportunity.
