Each year students from grades 4 through to grade 8 compete in our annual speech competition. The students pick a topic of their choice and the winners in each class present their speech to their peers and teachers. A vote is taken and 3 students from each class present to their friends and families. This also gives them experience of presenting in front of a large audience. The students who are not presenting are also learning how important listening skills and manners are when there is a presenter. It gives our students the opportunity to learn from one another. Students compete locally and regionally. Our speech presentations enhances the curriculum (especially in the younger grades), challenges the students and gives them an excellent early start in public speaking focusing on modulating their voice, memorization, eye contact and confidence. For the first time grades 1,2 and 3 were invited to participate is our speech competition and it is with pride that I say that they excelled and rose to the challenge.
