Earlier this month, Havergal’s Grade 8 students learned about life as a Pioneer in Ontario by History & Culture Resource Specialist Lianne Harris. Dressed in costume from the late 1800s and early 1900s, Ms. Harris took the students back in time as she explained a variety of artifacts on display in the room, which she had inherited from her ancestors. These items included corsets, tools, traps, utensils, toys and other household items that we no longer use today. Ms. Harris detailed the daily lives of people in Ontario during this era and explained how much more difficult life was before the comforts of plumbing, electricity and other technologies that we take for granted today.
This special interactive presentation was a great way to help our students understand what life was like here in Toronto more than 100 years ago and was a great way to support the Grade 8 Social Science curriculum about Canada in the late 1800s and early 1900s.
