The Abelard School is excited to announce The Vitalik Buterin Scholarship for a student entering grade 9 or 10 who displays exceptional achievement in both math and science and the humanities. The scholarship, named for Abelard alumnus Buterin, co-founder of the blockchain/cryptocurrency Ethereum, reflects the breadth of his own accomplishments as a student at The Abelard School, and is funded thanks to his generous donation.
“Even among our gifted students Vitalik was exceptional," says co-founder and current principal Michelle Lefolii, “In addition to excelling in the maths and sciences he studied Ancient Greek, Latin, French, philosophy, history and politics. But Vitalik was always ready to assist his classmates and the younger students."
Buterin credits The Abelard School for making him “want to learn, and to focus on learning as my primary goal." In a visit to the school in November, he told the students that the breadth of education Abelard offers is important to their growth and he urged them to value the cross-disciplinary curriculum at a time when many other schools are focusing on STEM.
What advice does Buterin have for aspiring tech innovators? “Working in this industry involves a broad range of knowledge and skills. It involves math, it involves computer science, it involves politics and it involves some of everything put together, and in a way that requires you to understand how all the pieces fit together instead of just seeing them as completely different boxes that you're studying for."
